Sharing Files on a Network
  1. Right click on "Network Neighborhood" and then left click on "Properties."
  2. Under the "Configuration" tab, click on "File and Print Sharing"
  3. Click in the radio button in front of "I want to be able to give
    others access to my files."
  4. Now click "OK."
  5. You may need to insert the Windows 98 CD to be able to continue,
    so have it handy.
  6. The computer will tell you that Windows 98 is building a database
    and then prompt you to Shut Down and Restart.
  7. Once the computer has restarted, right click on the desktop and
    click "New" then "Folder."
  8. Name your folder then right click on the folder and left click on "Sharing."
  9. In the box click the radio button in front of "Shared As" and when
    you do the Share Name will automatically become the name of the
    folder.
  10. Under "Access Type" click the radio button in front of "Full."
  11. Now click "Apply" then "OK."
  12. Once you have completed these steps your folder should have a hand underneath holding it... to indicate it is a shared folder.
  13. To access your folder from another computer on the network you
    first must know the "Identification Name" of your computer.
    To do this you should right click on "Network Neighborhood" then
    left click on "Properties." Click the "Identification" tab at the top
    andyou will see the computer name in the box below.
  14. Now from anywhere on the network you will be able to access your
    folder by double clicking on "Network Neighborhood" then finding
    your computer (remember the name you discovered in step #13)
    Double click on your computer and you have access only to the
    things you shared.

Sharing Printers

It is possible for several computers to share the same printer if the
computers are connected to the network. This is possible for not only
the computers and printers within one classroom but from anywhere in
the school, such as another classroom, a lab, or the library. Follow the
steps below:
1. Start with the computer that is connected to the printer.
2. Right click on "Network Neighborhood" and left click on "Properties."
3. Click "File and Print Sharing" button. Then put a check mark in the box
that says "I want to be able to allow others to print to my printer." Now
click "OK."
4. Click on the "Identification" tab and write down on a piece of paper
the Computer Name do not change the name of the computer, use it as it is.
5. Click "OK." The computer will ask you to restart, click "OK" or "Yes"
and allow the computer to shut down and restart. (If the computer asks
for your Windows 95/98 CD, you will need to insert it in the drive.)
6. From the desktop, double click on "My Computer" then double click
on the "Printers" folder.
7. Right click on the printer that you wish to share, then left click on "Sharing."
8. Click on the "Sharing" tab at the top of the Printer Properties box,
and then click the "Shared As" radio button. Type in a name for the
printer example "Room 32".
9. Click "Apply" and "OK."
10. For the next step you will need to know the "name" of the computer
that you wrote down in Step #4.
11. Now go to the computer that needs to print to the shared printer and
make sure that it is logged on to the network.
12. From the Desktop, right click "Network Neighborhood", and left
click on "Find Computer". Then type in the name of the computer that
you recorded and click "Find Now."
13. Double click the computer name that was found.
14. Double click the printer.
15. It is necessary to set the printer up on that computer, so now
follow the instructions on the screen.

Note: To be able to print to a shared printer, the computer that it is physically hooked up to MUST be on. You will not be able to print
remotely, if the other computer is shut down.
