Discover Louisiana Unit Introduction:
Today we begin a unit of discovery, “Discover Louisiana” and discovery about technology, curriculum, and the integration of the two. As this journey of discovery begins we invite you to think about….
Day One Journal Writing Prompts:
- “What are my reasons for being here?”
- “What do I hope to gain from this experience?”
- “How do I envision my classroom changing with the use of technology?”
Journal Writing in MICROSOFT WORD. “Thoughts from Louisiana”. Click Journal Template (word) button at the top left.
Techie Time:
Create a Folder on the Desktop for you to save work into. Right click on the Desktop > New > Folder and type your name > Click out of trouble on the Desktop.
Introduce
MICROSOFT WORD concepts: Entering text; don’t press “Enter” unless you want a new line; one space between words and sentences; editing by clicking in text to insert and pressing backspace or delete to erase; spelling and grammar checking; selecting and formatting text.
Basic Microsoft Work skills - Part I
Save your journal entry as “Day 1 Journal” to your folder on the desktop and print two copies. Learn about  network printing and routine for picking up and filing printed work.
Super Speller Activity:
Each day you will have a Louisiana spelling word that you are responsible for spelling correctly. If you complete the Super Speller activity for the day you get a punch on your Super Speller card. At the end of TangiTech, if you have five punches you get a special prize. Today's spelling technique is a simple one... just spell to one of the experts in the room. Sample Super Speller card

You have thought about your reasons for being here and written them in your journal. Please share your thoughts with a friend beside you. We will share a few whole group responses.
Techie Time - Windows:
Start, Taskbar, Desktop, icons, files, shortcuts, My Computer, Network Places, Recycle Bin, Settings/Control Panel, Applications/Accessories, mouse movement and difference in left and right clicking, format a disk, copy an entire disk, make a folder, delete the folder. KNOWLEDGE BUILDING:
Gather as many Louisiana facts as you can from Video "Reversing the Tide" and "LOUISIANA FACTIVITIES" or "LET'S DISCOVER LOUISIANA" software. Use other general Louisiana information sources to provide overview of facts. We are starting a unit of discovery about our state. Let’s build our knowledge base by gathering more information.
Use “FACT GATHERING SHEET”  (word) to record info as we watch video and review software in whole group setting.
Watch 5-10 minute introduction to Louisiana from "Reversing the Tide" Video Tape – Louisiana Department of Natural Resources Office of Coastal Restoration and Management.
INSPIRATION or KIDSPIRATION:
Use INSPIRATION or KIDSPIRATION to brainstorm with the whole group recording facts about Louisiana. Refer to TangiTech Tips for KIDSPIRATION (word) and INSPIRATION (HTML)
Techie Time with INSPIRATION/ KIDSPIRATION – Include Main Idea, changing font size, alignment of whole graphic, adding pictures, correcting, rapid fire.
INSPIRATION/KIDSPIRATION Exploration Time - Using INSPIRATION TangiTech Tips (HTML)or KIDSPIRATION TangiTech Tips (word) create a Concept Map using facts gathered this morning. Print 2 copies of your project. Be sure your name is on your map.
Project requirements – Main Idea and at least four major categories… at least three graphics and your name.

Have you noticed the Question of the Day poster? Post your answer with a stickie. There will be a new Question of the Day every day. Make sure you answer… there might be a surprise for correct answers.
KID WORKS DELUXE Process Writing Activity:
Review nouns, verbs, and parts of a sentence. Use your Louisiana Fact Gathering Sheet (word) to write a list of nouns on your Noun Chart. (word)
Use KID WORKS STORYBOARD Guide (word) to plan a Louisiana story. Expand nouns into sentences. Sketch out picture for story illustration.
Techie Time – Demonstrate KID WORKS DELUXE. Show how to use icons, use Story Illustrator, and Story Player. Type your Louisiana story.
Your story should consist of cover, two pages of text and illustrations and a back cover. See KID WORKS DELUXE TangiTech Tips (HTML) to learn more about the program. Complete the story and save to your desktop folder. Print 2 copies of your story and file.
Use Student Self Assessment (word) for an assessment of your story. Share one or two stories with whole group using the “Louisiana Author’s Chair.”
The Writing Process:
Talk about the stages of the Writing Process, Prewriting, Drafting, Editing/Revising, and Publishing (word).  How did we follow the process here? How can we adapt this activity to higher grades? Read information about each stage of the Writing Process.

Weather Watch:
We will check the weather, to add to our information about Louisiana. Record your findings on the Weather Watch Chart. You should check high and low temperatures and conditions for this day in Hammond, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C.? From now on the Weather Watch will be done first thing in the morning with Journal Writing etc. Use www.cnn.com/WEATHER. Weather Watch Lesson Plan (word) outlines the procedures for this activity.
Brain Check and Homework:

1. For homework tonight think about about a unit of work you will be teaching, and how you will develop that into a Technology- Connected Lesson Plan before the end of the TangiTech Institute. Read the articles listed below and be ready to discuss them on Day Two.

2. The journal article "Electronic Versus Paper" (pdf) by Melanie Fernandez-Learning & Leading with Technology, May 1999- can be opened using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Read the article and think about these questions: Did anything about this study surprise you? What advice would you give to a mother who asks whether it's better to read traditional printed books to her young child or to sit with him enjoying CD stories on the computer?

3. The journal article "Integrating Technology - Some Things You Should Know." (Internet) by Laurie Diaz - Learning and Leading with Technology, November, 1999 - can be opened using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Read this article and be ready to discuss.

4. Day One Assignment (word) sheet gives step-by-step directions for determining RAM and hard drive capacity.

Housekeeping
Make sure one copy of all printed work is filed in folder box and you have checked off completed activities on the clipboard by the file box. Collect supplies, and bring computers back to desktops.
